How to Die House Broke?

X has inherited a paid-off 3-bedroom house. X has low income, no debt, is single, doesn't have siblings or heirs, and would prefer to move in and live in the house for the rest of their life. Assuming X remains single and lives for e.g. another 25 years, how does X best utilize the value of the house for additional income, such that when they die, they've maximized the value of the house (vs e.g. it all going to the state)? What career would you recommend I pursue to increase my income?

I am 31F making $53,000 a year in a moderate cost of living area (Midwest USA). I need a better paying job and career in order to be able to accomplish my financial goals in a reasonable amount of time. I am already working on lowering my expenses to the best of my ability. Any recommendations? I have been considering sales operations, procurement, contract management, account management (not sure I would be good at sales), project management (there are no project roles at my current company, I have no experience in construction or IT). Best app to wire a rent payment with only an email address & Phone #

Yesterday, I wrote about the landlord's outrageous cleaning, financial expectations, and other demands. Blaming me they are trying to indirectly recover costs of removing mold from my closet. Regardless of who's responsible, their expectations are impossible. They gave me a new lease and a 20% monthly increase. I normally pay rent in cash (dumb). In our situation, handing over cash is a terrible idea. I'm making an electronic transfer. Not having bank info, can anybody recommend which an app (Venmo, Paypal, Zelle?) to pay rent with an unsolicited wire transfer using only an email address? [more inside]

Is there a better way to do remittances in 2024?

Friends and I send remittance payments to a mutual friend in Guatemala, once a month, and the typical services (Western Union, Ria, etc.) have extremely annoying limits which seem arbitrary and can never be explained to us by the wire services. Is there a better way, anno domini 2024? [more inside]

Landlord's unrealistic cleaning demands and a couch held hostage.

Please advise on how to proceed proactively and cautiously to prevent conflict from what seems like retaliatory whims after landlord spent money removing mold. I rent a furnished basement in a house with landlords. Unrelated to mold, they were replacing furniture and removed the couch to make space for a new one. After several days without a couch, I requested it be delivered. They said “no”; I cost them money due to unspecified “neglect.” My rent was increased 20% and insist I pay $1000 for FOUR professional deep cleanings because the place is messy. I'm feeling squeezed. Getting a money order cheaply and quickly best practices?

I have to pay my rent by the 7th of the month by money order. I've been going to the grocery store customer service because it's cheaper than my bank, but sometimes I have to stand in line for up to 30 minutes and this makes my whole day worse. Is there a time of day that customer service is slow and I can get in and out more quickly? What do you guys find easiest to do to get your money orders cheap and quickly?

Whether or not to go to boss about a coworker

This coworker started 6 months ago. The team is really small so out of 4 people, I would say she talks to me the most and has also come to me with her day to day questions, sharing banters, etc. I feel like her behavior is starting to affect the team dynamic but not so much my day to day work so I'm debating if it's worth going to my boss about. I don't know what my goal would be if I do go to my boss. See examples below of the behavior I'm having concerns about. [more inside]

Are Job Sites Still Effective for Finding Jobs?

I'm about to start looking for a job for the first time in 7 years. I updated my accounts on Indeed (where I found my last job), LinkedIn, and my local state's jobsite. Before I start submitting applications, I'm wondering if these sites are still effective for finding legit postings, or if there's now too much misleading information (kind of like dating sites!)? Ideally I'd like to avoid optimistically plugging away, not knowing that I'm actually going nowhere fast. If these sites are no longer the best route, what is now? [more inside]

One used car for another

How Is My Income Calculated for ACA Plans?

I won't have a job come 2025 so I'm going to need an ACA plan. I have personal investment, rollover IRA, Roth IRA and 401k accounts, and a personal savings account. On the ACA site you have to enter your expected income - which affects your tax credit - and this page says, for Investment Income: "Include expected interest and dividends earned on investments, including tax-exempt interest". Like, all of it? Including interest on my 401k which I've been growing most of my life but can't realistically use yet because I'm not old enough? [more inside]

Help me return to work in the healthiest way possible

A year ago, I was working a high-powered, corporate senior leadership job that took over my entire life. It pushed me beyond my limits, and I ended up suffering a terrifying mental health crisis. I left work, and I've spent the last year recuperating and figuring out what to do next. I am now better and feel ready to work again. I am starting a new full-time job soon. I'm optimistic it will be different this time around, but also worried that I will fall back into bad habits. What can i do to increase my chances of having a healthy relationship with work when I return? [more inside]

Should I leave my comfortable dead-end job?

I've worked as a graphic designer for a very small puzzle company for nearly five years. It's very low stress, and I have a decent amount of creative freedom. I have one boss and three coworkers and I get along well with all of them, and I live right next to the office so I have no commute. I'm autistic, and pretty much every other job I've had has been a nightmare, so I'm very reluctant to give up something so comfortable. [more inside]
