We (a Midwestern family) have a few days in Newport/Laguna Beach, what should we do and see with a 10 month old? Bonus points for a 42 year birthday celebration dinner/activity too. [more inside]

Looking for suggestions for cool/quirky places to see in an afternoon at Newport Beach (history, nerdy, technology, walks/views, etc.). I'll probably head down towards the beach, and take it from there. Bike rental is a possibility. Cheap-ish (non-fancy) seafood and Asian places would be appreciated. I could also stand a $20-25 cab ride each way to somewhere interesting. Thank you! [more inside]

I'll be attending a conference in March, and staying at Newport Beach (Specifically the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa). I'll be interested in checking out the beach, getting a few good meals, and getting beers after the conference. Is that sort of thing walkable, or should I consider renting a car? [more inside]
