So I just bought a ticket to Indonesia for a couple weeks out to discover that there's a rule saying I need six months left on my passport, an American one. State Department website says that landing with less than six months could get one sent back or that airline could refuse boarding. I have five months left on my passport as an American living in China. Does anyone have any experience with this? [more inside]

Yesterday I took a (metred) taxi in Bali. Upon arriving at my destination, I attempted to pay the driver. He said "no sir, no sir" and made me get out of the taxi, at which point I paid him by passing the money to him through the open passenger-side window. Is this some kind of local taxi etiquette? Is there a reason for it?

Going to Yogyakarta for five days, as a base for exploring that region of Indonesia. I have a guidebook but no hotel reservations/set plans, other than taking a day trip out to Borobudur. Any advice (re: things to see/do/eat or areas to check out or avoid) coming from personal experience would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have a round-trip ticket to Jakarta for a week in early May but have no plans beyond seeing the city for a day or two. What sort of excursions to worthwhile places can I take from Jakarta as either day trips, or up to 3-4 nights? (I'd prefer not to fly anywhere as I'll only be in that region for a week, but I would be willing to take bus/boat/train rides of up to 4 or 5 hours from Jakarta.) Thanks!

Are you currently in Ubud? I want to visit there next week for a fortnight. My travel agent is having a hard time finding somewhere nice (such as Bali Spirit) to stay in. How hard would it be to find a nice hotel or bungalow (US$50-$80) if I arrive without a booking? Do you know of any nice places to stay that have vacancies from July 22 - Aug 5 that I can book with direct? Thankseversomuch.
