Any suggestions for places to stay in Cinque Terre and Rome for honeymooners on a budget? Can afford more than a hostel, but not more than about 60 euro a night.

We liked the Hotel Romae in Rome. Near the Termini station, and nice breakfast. Quiet rooms, although small. Their B&B is in your range, I believe.

You are going to LOVE it.

We stayed at the hostel in Riamaggiore, I think. It was nice. Let me get some more info for you.

There are room brokers all over cinque terre. Basically you go into one, tell them what you want and they walk you over to a room in a building. I stayed in a nice one with a patio and great view for about 50 euros a year ago and had no problem finding one. This was late in July or early August.

Earlier this week I already mentioned this in another visiting Italy thread, but I've got a big photoessay up at my site about a two-week trip I took with my boyfriend in 2003. We went to both the Cinque Terre and Rome (among other places). For the former, we actually stayed in La Spezia, which is a town within convenient train distance. Our hotel sucked ass though, and there wasn't much to do there. I'd recommend staying in one of the Terre, if you can. I'm ransacking my e-mails and I can't for the life of me find the name of the place we stayed in Rome. It was nice though, and away from the craziness of the train station. If you're going in the summer, do NOT underestimate the importance of air conditioning. We thought we were such tough backpacking types that we didn't need it, but a few sleepless nights decided the issue. We made sure we had A/C from then on.

I highly recommend The Beehive in Rome. It's a bit above your budget at 75 Euro per room, but it is hands-down one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. Handmade soaps in your room, funky furnishings, a great cafe in the basement, a courtyard to relax in, and free wifi! I stayed there in September 2005 and absolutely loved it.

Oh, and I know you said you wanted something better than a hostel but if you do end up going the hostel route, The Beehive also has really nice dorm-style accommodations for 20 Euro per person.

The Beehive kicks ass. You might also want to check out Cross-Pollinate, which is vaguely affiliated with The Beehive. It's basically a small network of hotels in Rome, Venice and Florence that meet your criteria. Pretty much everyplace they referred me to was good-to-great, and their web interface was way more helpful than any of the B&B sites I found.

My parents were in Rome recently, and stayed at The Hotel Meridiana which is right near the Vatican. It is a little more expensive than you're looking for I think (80 euro a night?) but it's supposed to be really nice and have a kick ass breakfast.

Gah. 60 euro a night at the start of high season in Rome is going to be a bit difficult, even at the hostels. Venere.com is giving me bupkis in that price range...lemme rack the old brain pan for a bit. the risk here is that you find something for 60 euros, but it's shite, which I'm sure you don't want for your honeymoon.

Hmm. How many days are you planning on staying in Rome? If it's around a week, an apartment let might be an option.

If you want a more touristy location, with more restaurants, bars, and a real hotel, you might to stay in Monterosso. If you want a more laid-back, small, and beautiful town, I'd suggest Riomaggiore. May I also suggest eating at La Lanterna? My brother and I stayed in Riomaggiore for about two weeks, and I was back a couple of summers ago; it's still great, but all of Cinque Terre is super touristy these days.
