Advice for Moving to Porto Alegre, Brazil!

I'm moving to Porto Alegre, Brazil for 4 months and need advice on living there. What neighborhood should I live in? The best way to find an apartment? Favorite hangouts?

I need to be in Porto Alegre for a project related to my doctoral studies, but I've never been there before. I speak Portuguese pretty well and have lived in Brazil.

Ideally I'd like to live in a neighborhood with a lot of street life and young people. Any suggestions on how to go about finding an apartment to rent for 3-4 months? I'd also be open to a homestay. Also, if you have a favorite hangout, I'd love to hear about it.

Alem de nao estar muito movimentado no momento, tem uma pagina de Craigslist em Porto Alegre que talvez seja interessante!

Boa sorte!

Porto Alegre's a wonderful city. I love Bar Opiniao on Rua José do Patrocínio.

I really enjoyed the area around Moinhos de Vento. I've stayed at the Sheraton there a couple of times and found wandering around that neighbourhood to be full of the buzzy streetlife (little cafés, bars and patisseries) you sound like you are looking for.

It's kinda cheesy, but the Galpao Crioulo is good for a laugh. The Koh Pee Pee is an interesting Thai place. Not the best food, but great ambiance.

When I spent a two-week stretch there, I stayed at one of the Accor apart-hotels. Decent place near the centre of town, but I can't remember what it was called and it doesn't appear to be on the Accor website now (I just checked).

Best answer: I emailed a friend who lives there, and she wrote:

The most alive neighborhood of Porto Alegre nowadays is Cidade Baixa. There he'll find everything and everyone, he'll eat lots of "X's", dance samba rock in João Alfredo St., have fun with the gaúchas and jump over some drunk beggars on the streets.

The best way to find an apartment, I guess, is to get in touch with people from the university and announce himself. Dont' forget that the local subtropical weather is crazy, so one has to carry a bag with umbrella, coat and summer shirts on the same day!

When I went there once to visit, I really enjoyed Nega Frida for the aforementioned dancing to samba rock. Great music, great atmosphere. The mercado público is excellent. And, the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana is quite nifty, as well.
