counseling and advice

I'm in a bit of a jam economically. I've got to make some decisions on how to proceed. Where can I go for advice and counseling on my best course of action?
I don't want to post my travails here on AskMeFi. Suffice it to say that Fat City is over for now and I'm in an economically unsustainable scenario. I've got to make some life changes and wish I had some resources for making better decisions. Are there websites where people are getting support and insight? Perhaps counseling of various kinds?
I have perhaps one person I can talk to about my situation with honesty other than my partner, who is part of the problem.
Where do you go for some real-world advice and perhaps some social support while you make changes?

You might want to consider posting your story/questions over at the Personal Finances discussion boards at The Motley Fool (perhaps specifically to the Credit Cards and Consumer Debt or the Living Below Your Means boards).

I always recommend the Motley Fool - I find the site itself useful and the forums invaluable.

The FTC consumer site has some information on credit. You can obtain an annual free credit report from annualcreditreport.com (link to FTC site about this program). There's also a fact sheet on the US DOJ page, and a list of creditor and debtor approved agencies, which could be a possible start.

If you need it, visit your local Consumer Credit Counseling folks (you want the one that
is associated with a non-profit). Better to be proactive with dealing with any credit items before they become issues.
