Help identify a (most likely European) comic with Von Daniken style ancient astronauts that I vaguely remember from childhood.

I would have seen it in the early 80s, and it came in softcover Tin-tin sized volumes. It concerned (as I remember) a bunch of ancient astronauts knocking around on Earth befire the evolution of man, carving the Nasca lines in Peru with spaceship born lasers, that sort of thing.

(No, it wasn't Jack Kirby)

Sounds very Heavy Metal-ish. One of their special editions?

It definitely sounds like a Heavy Metal feature to me. But that's all I got.

Perhaps it was something from Marvel's Epic Illustrated series?

Best answer: I had one of these - and it explicity told stories in the Von Danikin mythology. It wasn't a comic book in the marvel/dc sense of the word, but a self contained 64 pagish comic album.

Ah! My google-fu is unstoppable:

The Gods from Outer Space .

Response by poster: It looks like it might the one… further googling shows a series of them. I don’t remember the cover being quite that awful, or the big Erik Von Daniken banner, and I remember the art being more like the above mentioned moebius/jean Giraud – that could just be my rose tinted memories though. I’d really need to see some interior art to know for sure, but the thing seems to only exist online as sales listings and that one cover.

I don’t suppose you remember if there was a story about a woman exploring a secret base that was in a recently drained lake, and finding a waxmuseum like gallery of mutant animals? And then being blinded by the glare from someones light?

I did find another cover. I distinctly remember the helmet design of the 'gods' with the rounded earpieces.

I agree that, yes, that first cover isn't as good as I recall, but also that the art style had this form of pointillism to indicate shading (as opposed to crosshatching or somesuch) that gave it a really unusual look.

Memory fails as far as plot, though, except that I thought they were the awesomest when I was six.
