where to sleep in the city that never sleeps

Hotel recommendations needed for NYC. Ideally downtown. Not crazy expensive, but it's for my parents, so it needs to be fancier than a backpacker's hotel/hostel (eg, private bath, not too noisy, clean, etc). Many thanks!
Response by poster: $150 sounds about right. To be perfectly honest, I'm not so sure what typical rates are in NYC. If it matters, I need the room for one night in the middle of the week towards the end of March.
Many thanks...

I have stayed at the two Marriotts near WTC (10 years ago) - now there is only one..., at the Loewes on 55th (I think) and Lex, and most recently at the Hilton near Central Park. All were clean, predictable, safe, well situated.
The room on Lexington was noisy - but Loewes rooms are largest, so try to get a room on the 55th side, not on the Lex side.
The Hilton at Central Park was only a short walk to the Park, and only steps from Carnegie Hall, the shops on 5th avenue etc... nice clean and well situated.
Why not check Trip Advisor for reviews of 340 hotels, 32 B&Bs and 54 specialty lodging in NYC?

Try Quikbook - I got a room at the Park South relatively last minute for less than $200/night. There are cheaper places too - This one was very tight quarters, but very nice overall, with many boutiquey touches.

I'm at the pod hotel on E 51st street right now. Great place in a handy location, and free wireless.
I booked through expedia. There are rooms with private bathrooms, and everything is new and shiny.

I did my research on Trip Advisor for a vacation trip in January. We stayed at the Affinia 50 and were very happy with the room and the location, but that is in Midtown on 50th and 3rd.

I've been to Hotel 17, and I would not put my parents there. I would recommend using Priceline or Hotwire to find a room. You can specify a price, an area (I'm sure downtown is one of them, although it might be way downtown, like wall street), and a star level. I've done that many times and I've yet to be disappointed in any of the rooms I've gotten.

Hotel 17 is a few blocks from Union Square, has some rooms with private baths, and is clean and in a quiet neighborhood. I've seen rates there around $150, depending on when, but you have to make sure you book a room with a private bath, and book well in advance, because they sell out of the rooms with private baths fairly early.
