Received Guitar Hero III for xmas and wanted an extra controller. I've noticed they don't sell individual controllers marketed for the PS3 but there are separate guitars marketed for PS2. Has anyone tried any of these? Do they actually work for PS3?
I've been reading some reviews and some people comment that when a second controller is added the buttons work but it doesn't generate sound.
If you live near a CompUSA you might want to look there. The chain is going out of business and they are selling everything; I went to the one near my house and they had a GH3 guitar sitting in a pile of demo game stuff. (Most of their stuff was not worth the price they wanted; I just ended up buying a bunch of clipboards that I talked them down from $1.79 to $0.50.)

Sorry for all the acronyms, but basically the answer is yes. As I understand it, the guitars use an open controller standard that any PS system would recognize.
As far as generating sound, that part of your question confuses me. The game itself produces the sound, so as long as it recognizes the controller, you'll get the full effect of playing.
FWIW, there are a bunch of 3rd-party guitar peripherals that debuted at CES this week, and there are even guitars you could buy that would allow you to play on GH games as well as Rock Band, if you ever make that leap. Here's a recent Gizmodo article discussing and comparing the options.
