DIY Music Toys - The DIY Music Box Kit is the kind of thing I'm looking for. I've also got enough links and resources about circuit bending toys, etc. What other music doo-dad toys are out there for not-so-serious music making?

Get yourself an Omnichord! You can get them for less than $100 on eBay, and you can produce something tolerable to listen to right away.

Response by poster: Good suggestions so far - I should make clear that I'd like to steer away from the more technical "solder and bend and poke and read schematics" end of things if possible.

Build yourself a cigar box guitar. It's fun!
Also, I got some good answers when I asked a similar question. And Dennis Halvena's website is full of interesting seed ideas to get you started.

I'm an electronic music who gets no end of fun out of thumb pianos and melodicas. On the electronic side however, there's also the Buddha Box.

This working gramophone kit seems get raves by anyone who comes in contact with it. I have no firsthand experience, but I gather that you can use it to record as well as play, and for convenient media, the needle will scratch the recording into the plastic surface of old CDs. (I walso suspect you could find or modify a blank-CD with the top laminated - suitable for gramophone needle recording on the top, leaving the bottom still useable for digital audio? That could make for some awesome dual-media disks... I wonder - they might even play in a standard vinyl record-player! (Use an old needle :-) )

Apparently it can take a bit of searching to find a store with stock, as most places outside of japan that stock it seems to sell out pretty quickly.
