The Room, on Sullivan btw. Houston and Prince.
I think they have one or two other locations in Manhattan, too, but I'm not sure where they are.

Define "Indie". There are quite a few places that play 80's music, which is most likely what the smiths would be grouped under these days. For a generally dance-ish scene try albion/batcave - which is quite goth or Don Hill's for a more mixed crowd. Sometimes CBGB's or CB's Gallery is decent. A lot of todays "indie" bands would be concentrated in Williamsburg (I'm thinking of north six (tonight is HNIA, which should be good) and some more in free williamsburg or this list (check out the title). If you get a copy of the village voice you can look through the music section to find what you want. There is almost always something worth going to.

Isn't The Knitting Factory supposed to be pretty cool? So I've heard, anyhow.

Shows how out of the loop i am : >
I got an email from a lurker about this--So, I thought I'd drop you a line with an answer to the Sgt's latest
AskMe - I dunno if you're familiar with the weekly Misshapes parties at Luke & Leroys - http://misshapes.com/ - but I'd wager thats the single most likely place for the Sgt to get his Smiths fix in a club.
Hope that manages to be helpful!

Brownie's is now Hi-Fi, as bcwinters says, but it's the same owner. If you want to hear recorded indie music, it's the home of the awesomest jukebox on the planet. Also, Mike is now starting to have simple listening parties for new records. Every Wednesday, I think.

PS: I think Hi-Fi is doing a Morrisey listening party this week.

should we do a mini-meetup? (or is it too meat-markety there now?)

It is kind of meat-markety, but it's generally good people. It's not Wall Streeters and UES assholes, mainly downtowners who are blatantly just trying to meet new people and who are not too hung up on a lot of show and trappings.
