Recommend some good, web based multiplayer games - I want to play with a friend who's in another state. We tend to enjoy games involving strategy and politics.
Settlers of Catan. There are several versions online, including a crappy MSN one that makes you use Explorer, as well as other free versions, sometimes with other names. The German board game of the year 1995 ported to the internet can't be beat!

Get Hostile is a web version of the classic board game Acquire. I highly recommend it. No politics, but a lot of strategy.

A great online version of Settlers of Catan, along with a few other good games.

I'd also recommend Settlers of Catan. It might take awhile to get into, but it's very flexible -- you can invest as much or as little as you want into it, and it's still a pretty fun game. Each game plays pretty quick, too -- only a couple hours per game, as opposed to days.

Do you play boardgames? SpielByWeb and MaBiWeb have web-based implementations of several Euro (strategy, no politics) games and an active community.
If you play some of the more hardcore tabletop wargames, ACTS is an online community for finding players for these games. ACTS records the "narrative" of moves and die rolls; the games themselves are typically played through VASSAL or CyberBoard. Rules for a lot of these games can be found on BoardGameGeek.

Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates or Bang! Howdy. Also as complex or simple as you want to make them.

Politics? In Puzzle Pirates? Not any more, I'm afraid.
Besides, it's not truly "web based".

I'm a big fan of Nexus Wars. There is some strategy and politics involved if you run a faction, but mostly it's a text-based, PvP role-playing game.

Civilization isn't free, but Civ II is! That's another great free game.
