Convention Food

Meeting a friend for lunch in Boston. She's at the Boston Convention Center near the World Trade Center, I'll be around the public gardens and the Common. She only has 2 hours to get somewhere and eat, while I have all the time in the world. Where should we eat? Under $20 a meal would be great.

Try Legal Test Kitchen at Seaport Boulevard and Northern Avenue.

Chinatown is a 10 minute walk for her, and if she can get a shuttle to South Station, Chinatown is right across the street.

Probably too late but you should go to The No Name Restaurant.

There's a lobster shack right next to the Courthouse, on the entry to the harbor next to the pedestrian bridge. Don't remember the name offhand.

The lobster shack is the Barking Crab. I also second the No-Name Fish Restaurant.

I'm probably late to this party.

I suggest The Barking Crab. It's over by the big new courthouse off Northern Ave, as mentioned above. It has good burgers, in addition to the seafood.

If you have a car (and a map, if you don't know the area), you could take Summer St. over into South Boston, and there are a bunch of pubs over there, too.

No Name and Legal are good suggestions near the convention center. I like Gungho's suggestion of Chinatown, though, since it's roughly equidistant walks for the two of you. My favorites are China Pearl on Tyler St (they specialize in Dim Sum) and Buddha's Delight on Beach (all of their food is vegetarian - they make some great faux-meats).

For anyone reading this in the future...

LTK has not received a single solid good review, to my knowledge. I haven't been but it seems like a poor choice.

No-Name is a tourist trap that should have disappeared years ago.

Barking Crab is sort of a tourist trap too, but there's better food and atmosphere.

Going to Chinatown is always a winning proposition. The lunch special (3 dishes, rice, and soup for like $15) at Taiwan Cafe is a good choice.

Oh, and if you're out near the WTC at lunchtime or on a Saturday morning and you want take-out sushi, try going to Sea to You (same area as WTC and LTK). This company provides the raw fish for a lot of Boston's sushi restaurants, so the fish ain't getting any fresher than that.

Well, I give LTK a good review (what am I, chopped liver?) but the Seaport district, while great for finding strapping young first-year law firm associates, is lousy for finding good restaurants. So take what you get. Avoid, however, Sauciety in the Westin hotel; it's horrible.
