Cheap, decent hotel in north San Diego?

I'm new to north county San Diego, and have family coming to visit soon. Can anybody give me recommendations for a cheap - but not scary - hotel/motel? I haven't had any luck so far.

Best answer: Where in North County? Thats a big area.

I can recommend the Comfort Inn in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Great location. Cheap.

Response by poster: Tri-city area, actually, so Cardiff is in range, if further than would be ideal. Many thanks.

Ditto on the Comfort Inn Cardiff. It's one of the nicest places my wife and I regularly stay, and also one of the cheapest. $80 a night or so, which is a great deal in the area.

They have a good staff, great location, and very clean rooms. There's a gas station/convenience store next door and tons of great restaurants/shops within a few miles drive. Not to mention the beach.
