Cheap, decent hotel in north San Diego?

I'm new to north county San Diego, and have family coming to visit soon. Can anybody give me recommendations for a cheap - but not scary - hotel/motel? I haven't had any luck so far.

Where in North County? Thats a big area.

I can recommend the Comfort Inn in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Great location. Cheap.

Tri-city area, actually, so Cardiff is in range, if further than would be ideal. Many thanks.

And now that I'm properly awake, I see there are some closer to home.

Ditto on the Comfort Inn Cardiff. It's one of the nicest places my wife and I regularly stay, and also one of the cheapest. $80 a night or so, which is a great deal in the area.

They have a good staff, great location, and very clean rooms. There's a gas station/convenience store next door and tons of great restaurants/shops within a few miles drive. Not to mention the beach.
