Annoying Windows XP network connection issue

So I have a wireless connection. Standard, always on. I also have a VPN connection, only used occasionally at work when I need to access the protected resources. Can't connect from outside the office.

Thing is - Windows XP, or perhaps just the various programs I run, seem to want to treat this VPN connection as some kind of default connection. Firefox is the prime culprit, though it could just be because I use that internet application the most. It will always try to connect to the VPN (brings up the Connect window) when I try to access pages. I can close the window and the page will load fine. Other apps, e.g. MSN Messenger, IE, etc, do this as well.

There is no reason to connect to the VPN, and in fact when I am working on the machine anywhere outside of the office, I cannot. Why do these apps keep trying?

I get so frustrated that I constantly delete/recreate the VPN connection. I'd like to understand how apps treat the internet connection and how I can either make the wireless connection the default or just get the apps to stop trying to use the VPN connection.

Best answer: Try this:

Go to Control Panel, Internet Options and then the Connections tab, and select Never Dial a Connection.
