Buying a raccoon trap?

Does a place that rents Raccoon traps exist in the Chicagoland area?
A friend recently lost her cats, and though we have located one of them near her house, he always runs away from us. Is there a place that rents sometihng similar to a Raccoon trap - or if not, where is the best place to buy one?

Try this link for Havahart traps. You'll have to call to see if any of the suggested places actually stock them.

Actually, there are cat traps for this very purpose, although they're usually used to catch feral cats for spaying and neutering. I'd contact one of the local animal rescue groups like PAWS or Furry Friends... I bet they could put you in touch with someone who has a trap.

You can buy them at Tractor Supply Co. (TSC) - according to their web page, their store closest to Chicago is in Valparaiso, Indiana (about 50 miles away). We bought one recently for $60 (not in Valparaiso, though).

You might also want to contact the local animal control department. They're generally on the village/city or county level, easily find-able through the blue section of your yellow pages.

I was going to suggest exactly what MeetMegan said, I was down at Animal Control the other day (getting tags for my dog) and I noticed a sign about renting traps.

My mom had raccoon problems in Evanston and she got some traps from Animal Control--but you had to be resident.

Pick up a copy of Ragnar's 10 Best Traps, which is full of advice for deploying your Havaharts. He's keen on trapping domestic cats, and gets as much as $11 per skin.
