Online app to bring out shadow details in photos?

Long ago, I recall seeing a link (maybe on MeFi, but I can't find it) for a website that displayed some pretty impressive technology used to bring out the detail from shadows in photographs. I seem to recall that there was an online version that you could use for testing (upload your photo and it would lighten the shadow areas). Does anyone remember this, and if so, do you know the URL?

I remember it too. There were some pretty impressive examples of what it could do. And here it is: shadowilluminator.org.

here's something else worth trying: contrast masking. the sample image is the best example, but I've found that this technique works wonders on portraits.
