What is the name of this movie?

I'm trying to find the name of a murder mystery movie (or TV movie) that I've seen a couple of times on TV. It starts out as a reading of a new play. As it goes on, it turns out that the guy who set up the reading is actually trying to solve the murder of his wife by staging a play of it with people who could have killed her. (More inside, including spoilers)

He invites a policeman to observe, so when they discover who committed the murder, he can arrest him or her. The policeman sits in the darkened balcony. It ends with the lights going out, and the policeman finding a flashlight in a drawer on the set that he could only have known was there if he was the one who committed the murder. Apparently everyone on stage was in on it, and it ends with them walking out the stage door arm in arm.

I was pretty sure Michael Caine played the lead role, but I can't find a thing on IMDB or Google that would suggest this is the case. Any help?

Actually, maybe not as I don't think the ending isn't right. But it sure SOUNDS like Deathtrap -- even the part where the lights go out.

Best answer: I think it's Rehearsal for Murder (if you check the user comments, it seems to fit perfectly).

Response by poster: Yeah, it sounds a little like Deathtrap, but I ran across that a couple of times while I was searching, and that's not it. The plot details are off. And this movie takes place entirely in a theatre (possibly with flashbacks, but I can't remember).

Yeah, but Rehearsal for Murder doesn't have Michael Caine in the lead, and Deathtrap (memorably) does. Both came out in the same year and have similar plots but Rehearsal's ending does seem to be a better fit. Could Mauve Frog be thinking of both of them?

On preview, I guess not.

Sleuth is similar (and features Michael Caine).
