Help me with MiniDisc!

So, I got a portable MiniDisc player cheap at a garage sale (I don't have an ipod, I'm slow at these types of things) and it didnt come with instructions or any "line-out" type of thing. I wanna make mixes for it but I can't figure out how (I DO have itunes). Can anyone direct me to/give me info on how to transfer music onto a minidisc?

Can you give us the make and model?

Older minidisc players record primarily through a line-in, preferably an optical in like TOSlink. This can be connected directly to a CD-player with an optical out (many Sony players have this feature) and usually records in linear realtime. They aren't really designed for MP3s and the like.

Some newer decks have a USB system that's designed to convert MP3s from your computer, though. And I believe you can buy a third-party device to do this as well.

Actually, some of the older models didn't allow recording. You might have bought one of those. I did, years ago. I already had a separate MiniDisc deck for my stereo system, and that's how I recorded onto blanks.

Oh yeah, good point.

Are you sure it's a minidisc recorder and not just a player? If it's just a player, you're out of luck. Look for your model at minidisc.org.

Hella- I have one of those. It's here. And it IS a recorder.

You should be able to buy a converter from Xitel to transfer from the PC. Otherwise, you buy a TOSlink cable and connect it to a CD-player with a digital out.

The 70 is actually quite a nice player/recorder... I enjoyed mine.

This is what you need converter-wise. This is a newer model than what I've seen, but it should work. Requires Windows, though.

records in realtime

Just wanted to repeat that, because that was what killed minidisc for me. Waiting 60-70 minutes to transfer a CD got pretty old.

I have an old MZ recorder which I still use from time to time. If you're recording tracks from CD and have a CD player with an optical out, then really do get the TOSlink cable, since it'll handle the cueing and insert trackmarks in an intelligent way.

And if you want a manual, it's here [PDF]. The controls are a little fiddly at first, but are pretty simple once you're familiar with them.

Response by poster: wow, thanks y'll! I can't believe how quick I can get free advice form this site! Much appreciated! I'm so new to digital stuff, (as well as internet stuff) I feel like I've been welcomed to 1999!
