Fall color window in Canadian Rockies?

When might be a good week for fall color between late August and early October in the Canadian Rockies?
I recognize some of the variables which make planning difficult. Among them: seasonal variations in rainfall, wildfire threat and/or smoke, early snowfall, and tourist load.
We are in our early 70’s but have fairly good walking/hiking abilities but not all-day hike abilities.
We are considering the two-day Rocky Mountaineer Victoria to Banff or reverse and several days to loop between Jasper and Banff. Interested in history and the out of doors, not tourist overloaded hot spots.
Mrs. tronec not a fan of having husband navigate mountainous driving over long distances. Any good ways to make the Jasper to Banff loop with time to stop for hikes other than by car?
Or is there plenty to experience in the greater Banff area that we should just make that our base for a week?

Fall colours in the Rocky Mountain National Parks are mostly larch needles turning golden, as there aren't a lot of deciduous trees. At lower elevations, like you'd see from the train, this is usually around the end of September and early October. It will be a few weeks earlier higher up, e.g. if you do any hikes off the Icefields Parkway. It may be as early as late August if you get up high enough to see subalpine larches. But of course, you may also run into snow at this time of year at higher elevations.
There are bus tours from Banff to Jasper, but if you want to be able to stop for hikes, you are going to need a car. The Icefields Parkway can be difficult to drive if there is a lot of snow falling or ice, but generally it is totally fine, just another highway. Keep an eye on the weather and driving condition reports, be prepared to change your plans, and you'll be fine.
There will be limited options to stay in Jasper due to the fire, though there are a few rustic hostels along the Parkway if you don't mind roughing it a bit.
There's plenty to see from Banff or Lake Louise as a base as well, including a lot of the Icefields Parkway, but you'll still want a car.
No matter what you do, you are likely to see a lot of tourists until you hike away from the highway.

Consider both Yoho and Revelstoke national parks - smaller and some really good hikes - you can get away from the crowds and there's some stunning scenery on a couple-hour hike in each. Enjoy - it's beauty.
