What was this book with magical trees that I very vaguely remember?

Sometime when I was maybe 11 or 12, I read a book in which a girl, traveling with some kind of animal, spends a day traveling through a land where there are trees along the path. The trees are magic in some way, and produce water and food, which she suspiciously tests herself and then waits several hours before letting the animal consume it to make sure it’s safe. The journey ends in some kind of palace, I think, and there is also some kind of scene with drinking chocolate. This is literally all I remember but I would like to find it and read it again. Does this mean ring a bell for anyone?

Are you thinking of the Lunch-Box tree and Dinner-Pail tree which Dorothy and Billina the hen encounter in Ozma of Oz? The book includes the palaces of the Nome King, Evna, and Oz.

Xanth books feature food plants as I recall, but I can’t identify a specific one from these details.
