Small group homes / alternatives to LTC in Ontario, esp west GTA?

Looking for recommendations for my dad.

I toured a few LTCs with my mom (who divorced my dad over 30 years ago, and can’t stand him, but wants to help me sort out a plan in case anything happens to me or he gets worse). So, we both hate everything about the best ones. I mean I did see a few average to bad ones pre-COVID, so I had an idea of what was in store, was still disappointed given these “better” homes have the least worst inspections reports and were highly recommended. My mom was shocked and couldn’t in good conscience commit even her ex to any of these places.

I know someone currently in a tiny non-profit *transitional care unit* on the outskirts of Hamilton, which is too far for me to visit regularly which I intend to do. But this place is great, for an institution. Humane. High staffing ratios, good culture, friendly and largely conscientious people working there. I think they have under 30 beds. Is there anything like that closer to the west part of the GTA?

Also

- is there a database of non-profit homes? The Ontario Health AtHome site makes you look at individual reports to find out ownership model and size

- even nonprofit ones, some of them, are operationally managed by contracted private orgs with horrible reps ie Chartwell - is there a database that includes this information?

- do these smaller homes have a name, category or funding model I could use in searches? LTCs, retirement homes, and home care are the big ones. Maybe there are some orgs left over from the 1970s that maintain humanist ideals?

Best answer: I don't have a lot of intel for you but I have heard good things about Villa Columbo (toronto, but haven't heard anything bad about Vaughn) in the west end - they do give preference to people of Italian heritage but it's not a requirement.

Downtown, a friend of mine has a parent with dementia in Belmont House and has been impressed, ongoing and during Covid as well.

If he doesn't yet need LTC, Christie Gardens is really highly rated, but long wait list and you have to start in the apartment living.
