Locked out of Microsoft email

I'm locked out of my hotmail email account, and my attempt at account recovery failed. What do I try next?
My primary personal email is an old hotmail account. Last week there was a notice that my account was possibly compromised, and I should reset the password. I tried to do that, and now I am completely locked out. I only access email on my motorola cellphone. I tried going through the security password reset options, but I think the backup email listed is an old gmail that I don't use anymore, and can't even remember for sure what that address was. I do have a new usable gmail account, so I set that as my contact method, and filled in the microsoft form online - who have you emailed recently, those types of account recovery questions. When I submitted the form, it said I should have a response within 24 hours. I did get a response, sent to the current gmail account, with a passcode. When I went back into hotmail, it won't accept that passcode. I don't know what to try next. My preference would be to just call somewhere and see if I can get it sorted out, but I don't know if that's even an option. Any ideas?
