Help me remember the title of a fiction book about a Rabelais scholar

I'm trying to pad out my Goodreads history, do you know the title and author of this book? I must have read it in the early 2000s, but it wasn't necessarily contemporary. All I remember is the protagonist was a Rabelais scholar and possibly a professor at an American university. It clearly left an impression on me!

Best answer: There is a Robertson Davies book where one of the MCs is a Rabelais scholar, though presumably the university was Canadian because Davies. The Rebel Angels.
