How to mask (?) text in a video

Follow-up to this question! I would like to cover the text in this Burma-Shave ad and replace it with my own poem. Unfortunately, the Mask option in Final Cut Pro does the opposite of what I want it to do--it cuts out the rest of the frame and just leaves the sign. What's the best way to cover the text in this video and replace it with text of my own?

Best answer: You can “invert” the mask. This user guide post might guide you to the right menu option to do it.

Best answer: You can create a solid shape that is the same color as the background. I don't have access to final cut pro anymore but I found a tutorial here. You can change the size and position to only cover the text and you should be able to add a bit of a feather to make it blend better if necessary. There should be a color picker option so you can choose the same color as the background you are trying to replace. You would put the text that you want on top of that.
