So it's come to this

Cancelling the Washington Post; looking for a digital subscription to a paper/news org with good national coverage and, you know, integrity.
Suggestions?
Probably doesn't need any explanation. We do have a subscription to a local paper.
Looking for something roughly in alignment with WaPo in terms of coverage.

Response by poster: The Philadelphia Inquirer does great work and is independent!
I took a look at them because they're independent and endorsed Harris but seem a bit too local and sports-heavy. They're in the running, though.
(I shall shutupeth now)

Become a supporter of your local NPR station. Or not. You can still read https://www.npr.org/ for free either way.

News Items John Ellis is a worthwhile, paid, Substack Newsletter but it does link to all sorts of other news sites. I believe that the Toledo Blade is still independent. As mentioned earlier, and I agree with your comments, The Philadelphia Inquirer, especially its Editorials, has been exceptional this year.

Another vote for ProPublica for national investigative news. They don’t cover entertainment/food/travel type of stories though.

I am following this thread and the linked one with interest, because, hilariously, the WP has just cancelled me. For years and years I've had a free subscription because I have a dot.gov email address, but I just got notified that "the program is ending." At least they've made it easy to say goodbye . . . .

I have seen Ground News recommended as an even handed news source but (believe or not) I never gave it a try because I am red-green color deficient (like 1 in 8 males) and their site is hard for me to read. Just FYI and FWIW.

I’ve been a US based reader of the Guardian ever since I studied abroad in Britain. National US coverage is surprisingly good for a British-based newspaper. I know the UK editorial board has had some TERF-y issues in the past, but I don’t see much of that in the US digital version. The Guardian is one of the best news sources when it comes to climate coverage because they do not take oil and gas advertising money, which most mainstream legacy American media organizations still do (like The NY Times).
To compare to the WaPo’s cowardice, here is their sister paper’s endorsement of Kamala Harris (the Observer is the Sunday version of the Guardian).

Response by poster: So as of now, I'm not subscribing anywhere and I'm considering dropping the local news as they didn't report a fire in the woods two miles from my house for three days as the smoke swept across a major route that goes through our town. I'm in a hold pattern on that, because they are quite bad, but I suspect it is run by three kids in a trenchcoat and I should maybe cut them some slack. (How did we find out the woods were on fire? Fucking Facebook, which my husband has, and I do not but clearly I should because it is hard to tell at this point what is on fire. Also I was routinely driving through the smoke. I noticed that because I am very observant.)
The Guardian is top-tier for where I *would* resubscribe, but, they are looking to sell The Observer.
Carole Cadwalladr, if you're not familiar, is a heroic journalist who has done so much to investigate, unpack, and reveal the machinations behind the 2016 and 2020 elections.
She works for The Observer, technically, by my understanding, and has absolutely suffered enormous and terrifying pressure from her reporting on these things.
There are actions and pleas to undermine the sale, but it's looking like if I can't trust The Guardian to protect Carole Cadwalladr, I am 100% not supporting The Guardian.
So I'm in a holding pattern. I'm willing to string a bunch of things together, there are smaller organizations that I will likely pay for, but to do 'big' reporting and investigations, vast amounts of money surely help, and if I could throw some money at an enterprise not spectacularly venal, compromised, or shabby, I would, but at this point....I still don't know.
I want Watergate level reporting and that shit costs and I'm aware of all of the forces that have led us to this but it's just so sad.
Fortunately my heart was broken by the election so I guess 'well now we don't have news anymore' is something I'll mourn come, I dunno, March?
