Am I overthinking this similarity ?

Since I watched the inaugural ceremony to the Olympics, something has kept bothering me. I was pretty sure I recognized the first theme of the official music. I finally nailed it, but - and I mean, apart from the arrangement, tempo etc. - are this music and that one that similar or am I overthinking it ?

We are talking about Parade by Victor Le Masne, the official theme for the 2024 Summer Olympics, and Climbing the Walls by They Might Be Giants, right?

If so, I don't see any similarities. I'm guessing though the second link may need a fix. Unless I totally missed something? (Which wouldn't be the first time...)

Best answer: Right. So by saying "apart from the arrangement, tempo etc..." you're asking, is the melody the same? Yeah... I guess somewhere under all the TMBG's instruments you can kind of hear the same notes. But that happens in music sometimes, often due to subliminal influence of one on the other. Maybe Le Masne is a fan of the band and heard Climbing the Walls at some point.

Best answer: I can see it, but only sorta. But the structure is common (it reminds me of "Mr. Blue Sky') and the melody, though similar, is also kinda common. But I can see it. I'm sure it's unintentional.

Best answer: You're right, to my ears - those few bars from both have closely aligning rhythms, melodic contour, and emphasis, and relatively similar 'feeling' harmonic progressions (though not the same ones)

Best answer: As a data point, I listened to your first link cold and without knowing what your second link was I found myself humming the TMBG song.

But also as a data point I am a giant TMBG fan and I think that the sort of trilly stepped alternation of notes featured in both songs is a fairly common melodic structure.
