Can you find me a dresser?!

I need a bedroom dresser about 4 feet tall and no more than 42 inches wide.

I thought I'd found the perfect one from a site called Living Spaces but it's defective/poor quality so I'm returning it. I've looked at crate and barrel, cb2, west elm, pottery barn, macys, article, etc. I would like it to be mostly made of wood, not manufactured material. Ideally I'd like white but other LIGHT colors could work. No dark wood. Any suggestions of places I haven't looked?

I don't know if you'd consider Ikea, but the Malm is an old classic--I've had one for many years and it's held up through several moves. Comes in white or a sort of oak veneer. This one is taller than the Malm and less than 3' wide. Both are basically particleboard, which may of course be a dealbreaker. Tarva is narrower also, but is solid pine.

Room and Board. They also have a few models of *cabinet* that can be custom sized to the inch, not sure how well they’re configurable to meet your needs as a dresser.

Chairish also has a search engine that allows you to input dimension ranges.

Oh, and also, a higher-end option might be Dania (it looks like you're in the Bay Area? They have stores there.) This is one in a light wood that fits within your dimensions; this is white, a bit taller than your specs; this is another narrower white option.

IKEA also has a Hemnes line that's all wood. Ours is nice and sturdy and open very easily. We actually prefer it to the more expensive Macy's brand we bought. It comes in various stains, including white. The width of the taller units is 42 1/2 inches, in case that 1/2 inch is a deal breaker.

A different approach: Twice so far, I've solved a similar problem by finding someone on Etsy making the style of furniture I wanted (but not quite at the size I needed), and asking them if they were open to custom orders. Both times, the answer has been yes, and I've been very happy with the results.

Someone in a previous Ask mentioned using Mountain Mule Hardwood on Etsy, and being very pleased with the experience and furniture.

Around here, at least, a few of the local independent furniture shops also offer custom and semi-custom pieces, usually brokered from a local(-ish) manufacturer. These are usually made from oak, birch, or maple plywood (or veneers), with hardwood trim and edge banding, so you don't see those exposed plywood sandwich layers. (Disclosure, the office supply/furniture shop where I used to work offered such products; that manufacturer did not make it through COVID and has since closed down.) But those offerings were well-built, and while not heirloom grade, were a substantial cut above typical particle board stuff, and priced roughly midway between that, and full hardwood furniture like I linked above. We had many custom pieces made for clients, from custom-fit bookshelves, to desks made to fit a space, to my custom board games cabinet and dresser that I still enjoy. Might be worth poking around a few of your own local independent furniture retailers to see if they have similar options. Typical lead time for us was about six weeks.

If you’re considering the local artisan approach, another search vector will be local craft fairs (involving woodworkers). Most will have smaller items on display, and perhaps a few pieces of furniture. Find someone who makes stuff you like and go from there.

Response by poster: Kat Allison I love the Dania you linked too--perfect! Sadly, out of stock but I have a notification set for when it's back.

Response by poster: Credulous, I tried that but I get so annoyed when things come up that do NOT meet my parameters!
