captions added over video in safari

We're watching a live video on a tv channel's website. It's adding very large, badly machine generated captions over the middle of the video. How do I turn them off? Safari on a MacBook running Sonoma. Checked system settings and the captions everywhere setting is off.

Response by poster: If I change the captions display settings in system settings/accesibility, it changes how they look. I can't find any way to turn them off.

Does hovering over the video cause any UI controls to pop up? Regardless, have you tried pressing C to toggle captions?
