box spring cloth cover?

Over her puppyhood, my dog tore up the gray fabric underneath the bed's box spring. She seems pretty much done with it now. Did the cloth do anything important? It has never made any difference to sleep quality or spring noise, AFAIK. Is there any reason not to just cut away the rest of the cloth to avoid mess?

I think it’s just to keep crap from migrating into your box spring. I might be the worst housekeeper ever but I have done pmuch the same, but for cat reasons.

It keeps dust out. When my cat ripped mine, I got a bedsheet at a thrift shop, trimmed it to fit, leaving enough excess to fold the edges under neatly, and stapled it on. More durable!

My cat ripped open a just big enough hole so she could climb up into it. It's her hidey-hole.

Response by poster: Good, it sounds like the lack is not a problem. It may embarrass me in front of the movers, but we should have a plastic cover on it anyway!
