Where in LA is that one location that appears in every single LA movie?

You know the one I mean: high up in an overlook on a hill, looking down from it you can see all the city lights. It's paved, there's parking for two or three cars maybe, and there's a bench.
Is it real? (If so, are there ALWAYS film crews on it?) Is it a movie in-joke like the Wilhelm scream? Is it in a studio somewhere?
Please please please please please don't say you don't know what I'm talking about because that will be spooky, it's impossible that nobody but me has noticed it appearing in every single LA-set movie.

The Griffith Observatory website. High up, great views of the city and it's public land.

Response by poster: No, no, this Griffith Observatory has huge white domes and manicured lawns and concrete. The location I'm talking about looks like just a regular paved road on a mountainside with an overlook on some spot along it (maybe at a dead end of it?)... not a building at all.

Set up a camera in the Griffith Observatory parking lot and point it towards the city, not towards the observatory. It's on top of a hill, after all.

Best answer: Could it be Mulholland Drive?

Response by poster: YESSSS that's the one! Haha I was about to put into my post that I first saw that location in the movie Mullholland Drive. D'oh. I took this info out because I've since seen that location in many other, much older movies too, and I didn't want to be confusing wrt timeline.
Apparently there are many scenic viewpoints along Mullholland Drive, interesting. Thanks computech!

Huh, Lynch was not too stingy with the title drops, it was mentioned seven times :)

You can find more details on the location, or other movies filmed in the area, on movie-locations.com or moviemaps.org. See also Griffith Observatory, which mentions La La Land.
(Why are film location websites all so crap? Is there a good one?)

Get back on San Vicente, take it to the 10 then switch over to the 405 north and let it dump you out to Mulholland where you belong, Chad!

(In reality there’s parking for way more than two or three cars but camera angles can make anything possible.)
