Free illustrator/graphic design desktop wallpapers

There was a sweet spot I knew in web history where cool illustrators and graphic design people would release free desktop wallpapers (and sometimes folder icons) of their work - but no longer do I know where to visit to download such things - do you?

Microsoft has wallpapers and 'theme packs.' you can unzip the themes and just use the wallpapers. They may come with icons, too. I still sometimes search for 'free wallpaper %subject' and while a lot of the sites have that seo feel, there are tons of free wallpapers.

Response by poster: Thanks, but Microsoft is definitely not what I'm looking for, although I'm sure there are a few neat ones in there - looking for specific sites where designers and illustrators showcase their work.

Maybe an example will help: more like this - The Desktop Wallpaper Project

Best answer: There's a subreddit, of course. and Deviantart.

You can save an image, rightclick on it and choose, set as wallpaper or desktop background, depending on windows version. You can choose how to fit the image to your screen, too.

Response by poster: I didn't even think of Reddit, duh! Thanks for that one!

Best answer: SMASHING MAGAZINE features new wallpapers every month, that are often timely, nearly always twee (or not), clever or charming. They generally have a bunch of desktop sizes pre-created making it easy to grab the right size.

Best answer: Unsplash has beautiful free as well as paid photos from photographers. They include, but are not limited to, desktop orientation.
