Looking for small, simple, high quality tuner/radio without speakers.

I want to replace my old 70s tube am/fm radio receiver with a small compact digital one.

I only need to it allow me to listen to the radio and plug external speakers into it, and have an aux input. I don't need something of "audiophile" quality but something that has a warm strong sound and radio signal, but importantly fairly small and compact. Any tips would be appreciated if you got 'em. Thanks.

I considered that, but you can't plug another speaker into it and have stereo sound. Otherwise it's nice looking and good quality.

The Tuner Information Center is a trove of information on this, they seem to have reviews for every Tuner and Receiver ever made. Most of their reviewers tend to favour the sound of older equipment (1960s-1980s). One point to be aware of is that modern digital/DAB sets use around 10X as much electricity as older AM/FM technology.

TLDR: Sony XDR-F1HD Digital Tuner

Thanks, that's a deep fascinating rabbit hole. I just found an old receiver model called The Sequerra and it's stunning. Not in my price range either.

Will you be plugging powered speakers into it, or do you need something that also has an amplifier?

(Or are you looking to add a tuner to an existing component hifi setup?)
