What it says on the tin, specifics within

I wish I had a good place to ask this stuff, I feel bad about spamming ask metafilter with these sorts of questions...but I do get good answers, in general. well, I recently set a recurring donation so maybe that's enough to assuage my guilt!!

regardless, here is what I want: I am on a mac, and I like the way in which gestures browse the screen. Alas, I cannot use gestures for physiological reasons (touch pads give me RSI). I was wondering if I could create a hot key (which I'd then bind caps lock to via karabiner elements) that, when pressed, would make normal mouse movement work like a gesture. This would be super useful.

I'm 99% sure this is possible ~somehow, I'm just not quite sure what the somehow is. Maybe some sort of 3rd party app, maybe just knowing how to configure the apps I already have (I have karabiner elements, keyboard maestro, lots of others). Any pointers.

I also wonder if there's something in your Mac's accessibility settings.

If you're comfortable writing Lua scripts, I'd take a look at Hammerspoon. Specifically, it looks like there's gesture-related stuff in the hs.eventtap.event module.

If you use Firefox, and middle click, then it smoothly scrolls when you move the mouse up or down, until you click. Is that helpful?

You can scroll by just pressing the spacebar

I love my Apple Magic Mouse 2 which allows one to scroll (horizontally or vertically) with a light single finger touch on the top of the mouse - it's analagous to the 2 finger scroll gesture on a trackpad.

Beware that many people hate this mouse, in fact I hated it when I first got it, but after a while I got used to it, and now it's "magic" (ugh).
