Black Forest Everything

I'm considering a winter trip to the Black Forest. Have you been to the region, especially in the winter? Please give me your tips on absolutely everything! I'm especially looking for ideas for cool activities + great towns to base oneself in + great hotels with a local vibe. Thanks!
I loved my summertime visit to the quite rural Maulbronn Cloister. It's near the Black Forest and relatively close to Karlsruhe, an interesting city in its own right.

I've stayed at Zum goldenen Engel in Glottertal on a couple of occasions, though in the late summer rather than winter. It has a good local vibe, with an excellent restaurant.
The ruins of Zähringen castle are accessible with a key available at the nearby Waldrestaurant Zähringer Burg. The food is by most accounts only okay, but the 13th century tower offers a nice view of the surrounding area. A few of the photos on Google were taken in the winter, so it appears to be accessible year-round.

We stayed in late Spring in Hornberg at Hotel Schloss Hornberg. The room was nice, the grounds were pretty, and there are hiking trails accessible very near to the hotel. I assume that they would turn into showshoe trails in the Winter! I remember it being a short drive to Triberg, the town with the giant cuckoo clock and waterfalls.
