Places to eat, visit, and shop in Jefferson City, Missouri

Where do we take our out of town guests in Jeff City, Missouri, when we just got here ourselves?

We just moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, a few months ago. We have been so busy that we have had no chance to explore restaurants, sight seeing, or shopping (beyond the grocery store and Target.) We are having out of town guests visit us the first week in November and are looking for recommendations. If anyone lives in Jeff City or has visited recently and has a favorite restaurant or cute shopping district to recommend, it would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend perusing the Jefferson City subreddit if you haven't already. Sorry, small towns don't have a ton of choices. See this thread for some ideas.

You could drive up 63 to Columbia and eat at Shakespeare's or Booches!

Central Dairy is great for dessert!

Voting for Columbia and going to Flat Branch (or Shakespeare's, or Booches). The Chokes and Cheese burger remains one of my all time favorite burgers.

Central Dairy is a must, though. When I was at Mizzou, I used to drive up and take my baby cousins (who are now in college) for ice cream sundaes after I finished with finals.

If Alex's Pizza is still around, very good. Greek-influenced pizza.

Go to Rocheport, half an hour away, a tiny, cute community right on the Missouri River. Eat at the Bistro at Les Bourgeois Vineyards, or at Abigail’s Café. If the weather’s nice, you can rent bikes at Meriwether’s Cafe and go for a ride on the Katy Trail.

I live in Columbia, and we drive to Jefferson City to go to Madison's restaurant downtown- it's really good. We are usually too full to go to Central Dairy afterwards, but that is a treat. I also like walking around downtown Jefferson City, which has a lot of cute shops that I don't otherwise get to see. Other options include Arris Pizza, which is definitely a local favorite. I've always wanted to eat at Towne Grill just because I like its exterior.

If you want to do something different for out of town guests, I would recommend the Claysville Store. It's north of town, but only 10 minutes maybe- it's south of Hartsburg on the Katy Trail with road access from Hwy 63. The food is delicious (fried chicken and country ham served family style) and I can guarantee a bona-fide rural-Missouri experience. They are only open weekends so I recommend reservations.
Cooper's Landing in Easley (further north on 63) is an outdoor music venue on the side of the Missouri River. They serve food there but often have food trucks as well. If it's good weather, this is a great spot.

There are lots of nice little towns in your area that are good for a day trip. Hermann would be an excellent one- you are surrounded by German immigrant history everywhere in central Missouri, and Hermann was the original epicenter of it. Fulton and California are two towns that are closer than Hermann that you might want to check out.

You're not far from various cave tours around the Lake of the Ozarks, including Stark Caverns, Jacob's Cave, Ozark Caverns (a state park), and Bridal Cave. These are all open year-round.

I really like the walking trail at Painted Rock Conservation Area, which is straight east of you outside of Westphalia. Very pretty overlook there!

If you message me, I can come up with other more specific options, though I am not a Jeff City expert!

I went to Mizzou, and would definitely drive to Columbia just for dinner at Murry's. My impossible-to-please father loved it so much he bought their coffee cups just to remember it by. Mmmmm, Murry's....

Shake's and Booche's also get my +1
