question about Verizon wireless

I may have agreed to a monthly bill I don't want! Am I now committed to Verizon?

I know I was stupid, please be kind! After decades, my employer will imminently stop supporting the mobile phone they gave me to use, and I wanted to keep the phone and number, so I went to the verizon store to see about it. My company rep did her part, then they instructed me to call a number "assume liability" of the account, by phone, while at the Verizon store. At the start of the phone call, the recording says "by continuing, you've agreed to the terms and conditions" and I continued....(yes I already hate myself) I gave them my email address and physical address, but no credit card information. They gave me my new account number and I set up a PIN. they said the next step was to go to my email and agree to the terms and conditions and then everything would switch to me. I said but wait, when do I get to choose a plan? they said I would just continue with whatever it was before (unlimited data for $90 a month, which I might not need!)
I got an email saying "your online bill is ready" ($0) with my new account number. ( Then 9 minutes later they sent me ANOTHER identical email with a different account number. a new, separate issue!?)

Is it too late to stop this? Am I committed to a 2 year unlimited data contract at 90$ a month? (maybe 2 two year contracts!?) I haven't spoken to them yet because I'm very stressed and embarrassed so I thought you could break it to me gently what I'm in for, or what my options might be? Thank you Metafilter

Verizon doesn't really do contracts any more. There shouldn't be anything stopping you from switching to a different Verizon plan, or even from porting the number to another provider.

Seconding that you probably did not agree to anything long term. Most carriers offer equipment discounts to get people to stay/commit. Also, stop being so hard on yourself because this is how a lot of high pressure tactics work. Acting like it is all a foregone conclusion is one of those tactics. I'd check around with other carriers to see if your phone will work with their network.

I think you should call or go in again and ask them why there are two accounts now and which one is correct. Don't agree to any changes yet, just find out what your real account is and log into it. If you have any kind of commitment, it should tell you how long it is somewhere in there.

When you do a transfer of billing responsibility all it does is move the line to its own account. Unless you agreed to a term agreement there isn't one. You will want to change plans to whatever you consider appropriate for your needs and probably want to consider porting your number to a cheaper MVNO. If you like Verizon's coverage, Visible is probably a good option.

Depending on where you live there is usually a legally required number of days during which you can change your mind with no penalty. It should be in the terms and conditions. You can also call verizon and tell them you didn’t understand and don’t agree to a contract and have them fix it.

I have Verizon and have switched my plan type from unlimited to a set GB data plan at will in the last year or two and had no trouble, FWIW. I would give it a day or so, create an account at Verizon.com if you don’t have one already, and see what it says.

$90 / month is absurd. Maybe it's a business plan? I went with Visible, using Verizon's network, and have unltd. data/ calls/ textx for 25/month. Go shop for a plan and move.
