Repeated article about walking from 42nd St to Central Park underground?

There is an article that appears in either New York Magazine or the New Yorker from time to time in which the writer tries to get from a building at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street to Central Park South without going outside.
Last time I saw one was about 15 years ago. I remember it was the first occasion he couldn't do it alone--had to bribe a security guard to let him get from one building to the next. Can anyone ID an issue when any of these articles appeared?
