What instrument is this?

Here is (part of) a photo of an unknown musical instrument being played. This is in Ethiopia, 1939. In the whole photo there are 8 total musicians playing this instrument. This is all the information I have, unfortunately. What instrument is this?

Best answer: It is a masenqo (sometimes it's also anglicized as mesenqo).
