Outdoor art installations around the world?

I'm having a hard time finding information about large-scale outdoor exhibitions that will be open until at least summer ... a lot of what I'm seeing online has closed or will be closing very soon. What are your favorites? Thanks!

My favorite weird sculpture park which is nonetheless both large and outdoors is up here in rural Vermont: Lemon Fair Sculpture Park. Is that the kind of thing you're looking for, or do you want one-off exhibitions that are time limited?

Response by poster: They don't have to be time-limited, thank you!

Response by poster: Also last threadsit: It can be one really amazing sculpture/piece, too ... as long as outdoors.

The Stuart Collection is a permanent world-class collection of site-specific exterior art at UC San Diego. The campus is basically accessible 24/7/365.

In DC, there's the fun National Gallery Sculpture Garden (the linked page gives a good sense of it). And in the Maryland suburbs is Glenstone, which I really have to get to this summer. Both are open permamently.

Storm King Art Center is full of amazing outdoor installations, ranging in size from small to ENORMOUS. Their permanent collection includes works by Calder, Serra, Goldsworthy, and many others -- and they also have wonderful special exhibitions that change through the year. It is very much worth repeated visits.

If you're in that area, Dia Beacon is also a great place to stop for an afternoon. They have several large-scale Serra pieces on permanent exhibit (situated indoors, but still amazing), and they often have other large-scale special exhibitions.

I've had Opus 40 on my bucket list for a while! It's about an hour's drive from Albany. Definitely a permanent piece of art that will be around in the future :)

You did say "around the world", so...

Japan:

The Hakone Open Air Art Museum near(ish) Tokyo is amazing. I enjoyed Kirishima Art Forest in Kyushu too, though not quite as much.

On the single amazing installation front, as far as I know there is still a Maman (giant spider!) outside Roppongi Hills in Tokyo... but I would confirm that with someone who's been there recently before planning a trip!

Denmark:

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art near(ish) Copenhagen has a good sculpture garden, though I have a feeling you might have to walk through the museum to get into it.

The Netherlands:

The Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands has a huge sculpture garden and is very outdoors (it's in the Hoge-Veluwe National Park).

The UK:

In the UK I can vouch for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Leeds, which is huge and great. I also really loved the sculpture park at Burghley House in Stamford, Lincolnshire when I went: the exhibits change every year, and they haven't yet put up information about this year's collection, but the page I linked to there definitely implies that there will be a 2022 Sculpture Park. Then there's the annual Frieze Sculpture in Regent's Park in London (which is not only completely outdoors, but also free!). That's maybe a little later than you had in mind: September - November.

Caveat: In all cases where entry tickets are required, you may need to go indoors to buy them. Apparently that isn't a detail that has stuck with me anywhere, sorry.

Anthony Gormley’s Another Place on Crosby Beach, near Liverpool, UK, is one of my favourite pieces of large scale public art. It perhaps warrants multiple visits because the way the statues interact with the environment and the public changes over time with weather and season and tide.

Also in the UK, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is absolutely world-class, hosting a huge number of pieces by artists and sculpters including Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Damien Hirst, Ai Weiwei, Andy Goldsworthy and so many more.

(on preview, I see the YSP has already been mentioned but I’m happy to second that recommendation)

Griffis Sculpture Park is one of my favorite outdoor places ever. My favorite section is Castle Tower, where you can climb around on some of the art.

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is operated by the Walker Art Center (located across the street) and is a destination in its own right, aside from the Walker. It's open year-round and has a mix of permanent and temporary installations. At about 11 acres it's one of the biggest urban sculpture parks in the US.

Jupiter Artland outside Edinburgh is currently closed for winter but should open in spring, through the summer.

There are also various outdoor sculptures in the gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. They include one of the Gormleys like those at Crosby, with several more standing at various spots in the Water of Leith river as it flows through Edinburgh, and a final one at the end of an old pier in Leith Docks (Edinburgh’s port). It’s called 6 Times - but I guess is more in the realm of public art than an outdoor exhibition, because it’s so spread out.

The Cincinnati version of this is Pyramid Hill. It is 300+ acres of regular and monumental sculpture. It is a bit north of the city proper.

Santiago X's contemporary mounds are really interesting. They're in public parks and, I think, intended to be permanent.

The sculpture garden at Pepsi HQ is absolutely first rate and quite large. Immaculately kept. Closed at the moment, looks like.
