I am helping a friend with a relatively large audio/video file. He's having a similar problem with the same program I had a couple months ago. We notice that each time AEP saves the file automatically, it seems to do so a tiny bit slower than the time before. Is each save, saving the entire file somewhere or just saving over what we just did?

I ask because last night, it got hung up in the middle of a save. So we closed out, turned off the PC and called it a night. Today, the shortcut on the desktop wouldn't open AEP. We tried the program itself, Run as Administrator, ... nothing worked until we tried Troubleshoot Compatibility, and that opened it. But we are worried his project will be damaged before we can finish it if it keeps behaving like this. What is the problem?

Your scratch disk is probably full. That's where the previous versions live (not like full on versions, but sort of notes as to what's changed each time you do something). It's there so you can undo things and revert back to a previous state using the History feature. It does get full more quickly when youre working with large files.

So you just need to clear it. Google 'clear Adobe scratch disk' and follow the instructions.

I recommend using "Save As" occasionally and either overwriting the old file, or preferably writing a new file (and deleting the old). At least with Adobe's other design products, this will generally result in a smaller file because it does force a full re-save.
