What should I read about what works in training?

I'm looking for resources (articles or books ideally rather than videos or audio presentations) about what makes workplace training successful, and / or about how to evaluate whether training has had sustained benefits, whether staff have learnt from it, whether any intended behaviour changes have been sustained long-term. I'm sure there must be some recent research or key texts about these things and would be grateful for any pointers. Thanks.

Futurist Kevin Kelly wrote a blog post years ago that convinced me that one of the best short courses on effective adult professional education can be found in the American FAA's Aviation Instructor book. It's available for free in PDF form. I used to give presentations at career and technical education conferences about the best resources, and year after year, I would have teachers thank me for alerting them to this one.

Design for How People Learn by Julie Dirksen might be useful.

The Association for Talent Development website may be helpful.
