In Qdobas of all places

I heard a song in Qdobas that I liked. The lyrics always repeat "I could be [blah...blah] but [blah...blah]".
It's a contemporary, rock driven song with maybe a touch of a reggae. Midway through the song there is some "La La La" repetition.
Yes- this is a sloppy question, and I wouldn't be suprised if the song or artist were popular. But anyway, I'd like to know who it is.

My guess is, "One of These Things First" by Nick Drake.
Somehow I don't think so.

Response by poster: Definitely not Nick Drake or the Proclaimers. Think more along the lines of Ben Harper.

Another vote for Because I Got High. Many verses of "I was gonna ______, but then I got high", and has a bunch of la-la-las. It's quite a bit of reggae but not really rock, though, so I might be off the mark.

Response by poster: Sorry, it's not Afroman. When I say it may be popular, I meant that in a contemporary Adult Alternative format kind-of-way.

Isn't it Public Image Limited? "I could be wrong, I could be right...". That's what popped into my head. Dunno the title of the song though, never liked PIL that much.

This Charming Man by The Smiths?
lyrics:
I would go out tonight
But I haven’t got a stitch to wear
This man said it’s gruesome
That someone so handsome should care
La la la la la la la this charming man ...

Best answer: What I was instantly reminded of was Zebra by the John Butler Trio - there's an audio sample link on that Amazon page.

Best answer: Independent analysis confirms that toddshot's suggestion, 'Zebra,' matches all your criteria perfectly.

And by way of followup, here's the lyrics. It does have a "la la la" section near the end too, though it's more of a "na na na" to my ear.
The only reason I even remembered this song is there was a period of time when my local movie theater played it before every single movie, along with a bit of trivia about the band. The only thing I remembered was that they mentioned the singer's daughter, who was sadly named... Banjo. I used that little bit of info to Google up the song.
