Counting the D's and R's

I've been trying to get numbers on how many people are registered as Democrats and Republicans in the US. I've figured out that there isn't any absolute answer (some states don't register by party at all), but I'd like to pin down the numbers that are available.

Some states (thanks, Arizona) have that info clearly posted on their Secretary of State page; some don't. Alabama doesn't have party registration at all - you have to choose which primary to participate in, and that's sort of stating an affiliation, but those can switch without needing to re-register anywhere. Alaska seems to have numbers by precinct but nothing statewide; argh my spreadsheets.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get these numbers without crawling through 50 SoS websites and playing "HTML table, PDF, or XLS download?" Presumably the DNC and RNC have them but aren't sharing.

I'm looking for the number of registered Democrats and Republicans in the US, ideally broken down by state but I'd happily take totals. Info on Independents, Libertarians, etc. is a bonus. NOT interested in "left leaning" or "right leaning" voting statistics.

Best answer: Ballot access might have what you’re looking for. Here is some info that is roughly current:

Nationwide Voter Registration Data by Party

Looks like the author will update the figures next month and breaks them down by state in the paper edition
