Time for another fanfic rec thread!
August 29, 2020 12:07 PM   Subscribe

Please post your long (let's say, anywhere from 30k to infinity) fanfic recs here!

If it's a long series of individually shorter fics that totally also counts.

(please include fandom, and maybe also pairing if relevant, rating, summary/premise, not just bare links)

Let It Bleed by elviswhataguy. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Willow/Faith, rated M. Slow burn Willow/Faith set after the end of the series, with a subtle and fascinating plot.

If you liked it, there's a sequel called Beggar's Banquet that is the same pairing, same rating, more episodic.

I never really thought I was a fan of Reylo ie Rey + Kylo Ren/Ben Solo but I went looking because no one's writing long form fic of my favorite movie and I love long fics. This is an arranged marriage fic written by a very prolific AO3 writer, disasterisms. It has tags of I'm a Trash Can Not a Trash Cant/The Trashy Romance I've Always Wanted to Write But With Light Sabers. It's very good. Landscape with A Blur of Conquerors

The absolute number one classic Good Omens bookverse fic, “Crown of Thorns” by irisbleufic. 75 chapters, max rating Explicit (not every chapter is explicit, though). The original source of the “Crowley and Aziraphale share a cottage in the South Downs” thing — and IMO the best. It’s about a whole lot more than just their relationship, though.

Almost everything by Telanu is a gem, but her fanfic Truth and Measure (Devil Wears Prada, Andrea/Miranda) is her longest. It's an incredibly slow burn and a wonderful read.

Guardian1 (better known now as Tamsyn Muir, of Gideon the Ninth fame) wrote (among other things) Go Not Gently, a Final Fantasy IX Eiko-centric fic that makes me cry every time.

Three Sided Coin, a K-ON! fanfic (anime). Ui, Azusa, and Jun start a polyamorous relationship. F/F/F, romance, friendship, slice of life. The rating is Teen and up.

Chocolate and Vanilla just work together, a New Game! fanfic (anime and manga). Nene and Umiko start dating. F/F, romance, slice of life, coworkers. This might be more on the mature side.

Aoba and Hifumi, another New Game! fanfic (anime and manga). Aoba and Hifumi start dating and move in together. F/F, romance, slice of life, coworkers. There was some official art posted recently by the mangaka that appears to make this ship canon. This is also on the mature side.

In honor of Chadwick Boseman: God Loves Everybody, Don't Remind Me by napricot, in which Erik gets a lot of do-overs to get it right. TW: lots of character death.

The Monstrous Regiment series, in which many Jane Austen characters are transposed into the Temeraire universe. AKA: Lizzy Bennet gets her own dragon. Who is named Wollstonecraft, naturally.

The Fourth Cetagandan War series, in which Ivan Vorpatril is forced to step up when nobody else can. TW: lots of character death.

Indigo by jplus, in which the characters from Rogue One are 19th-C pirates and rebels, and there is a slave plantation on the coast of Florida that needs to be destroyed.

Qui Habitat by Domenika Marzione, a very long Stargate series in which Earth falls to the Ori and Atlantis is left out on its own in another galaxy, awaiting the inevitable. [WIP but lots of meaty stuff there already]

The Responsible Science series by Lettered, in which, well, the Avengers do avengery-stuff and people are mostly reasonable adults but it's still the MCU and things get wacky.

the Desert Storm series by BlueSunshine, in which Obi-Wan Kenobi goes back in time to the year he was 13, but now he's a veteran of an ugly war who knows what's coming, and he's determined to stop it. [WIP but enormously long and worth the read]

Definitely THE KURTHERIAN GAMBIT by Michael Anderle. Books 1-21. Then all the Endtimes books and all the off shoots. Read the warnings and dive in, you may occasionally come up for air!

The Akashic Records. Good Omens. Gen, but the author does not shy away from death and horror. An emotionally difficult read in places, so take care of yourself first... but the angel and the demon do get their (qualifiedly) happy ending.

OK, one of the strangest fanfics I ever read was Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. It's a version of Harry Potter in a world where people actually use their minds. It's 661619 words in 122 chapters, so it's not infinite (not even aleph sub zero) but it's complete. To give you an idea, the Feynman Lectures are quoted in the first chapter.

Avengers:
Four Minute Window Bucky and Steve and their happily ever after.

Quiet Americans Buckys time after he fell through his recovery and into the future.

when i die i’ll sacrifice (more than enough for the afterlife)
Natasha after Endgame

Roll On It begins in a 1938 queer bar. It eventually gets to the future.

Foodieverse Avengers but if they all worked in the food industry.

And one Schitts Creek A Fair Return where Patrick finds a queer community.

Apparently I'm in a specific mood tonight. Try again tomorrow for something different :)

I guess this is where I surrender my dignity and admit that Harry Potter Dramione fanfics are getting me through late night pandemic anxiety. So I've now read Manacled 2x. It's darker than average Harry Potter alternate ending fanfic, with strong Handmaidens undertones/ overtones and it is incredibly written.

On a lighter note, anything Olivie Blake has written (including her original novels) is really good. I quite like Divination for Skeptics.

Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach by Nnm: what if Crowley from Good Omens went to a human therapist. From the therapist’s perspective. It’s warm and brilliant.

Salvage by MuffinLance: what if Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender season 1 fell off his boat and was rescued by Hakoda’s ship? There’s eventual hugging, it’s the sweetest.

(Re Crown of Thorns, the shared cottage in the South Downs thing was originally a comment from Neil Gaiman, per the author of that fic. Which is just so great.)

... welp, there goes my morning. My recs, by fandom (mostly slash, some gen):

Check Please!

Ice Crew, Please! by petals42, Teen and Up. Jack Zimmermann is notorious for being a hockey robot... until he befriends the Falconers ice crew and learns there's more to life than the ice. Fluffy with a bit of angst, and really lovely character development.

DC, specifically Superman and Batman:

Music of the Spheres, Superman Returns/Batman Begins, various ratings, by Mithen. Mithen is one of the best writers, fic or otherwise, there is, and her post SR/BB romance between Bruce and Clark is exquisite, from plotting to character to writing. If you read one fic on this list, let it be this one.

Cor et Cerebrum by audreycritter: A Bat-family centric series with an absolutely brilliant OC, Dr Kiran Devabhaktuni, and his relationship with this cabal of mad bats he's first doctor then friend and mentor to.

Harry Potter:

I cannot DISREC HPMOR enough. /deletes long rant/ Here is an excellent Twitter thread explaining why it doesn't deserve the hype.

There are so many excellent HP fic out there that you might be better off looking at this article, but a few of my favorites:

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past by S'Tarkan (mostly gen, future Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione). Infrequently-updated WIP, but so, so worth it. A thirty-year-old Harry, who's defeated Voldemort but lost everyone he loves, sends his soul back into his eleven-year-old body so he can relive his life and do better this time. This fic is just... so well done. It handles unintended consequences, Harry's PTSD, and the slowly rippling changes from that inciting event SO well. I especially love that S'Tarkan gives us Ron at his best.

Harry Crow by robst (Harry/Hermione) Teen, : What if Vernon had given Harry over to the goblins? I love how Harry does not understand a lot of things about human culture here, being raised goblin, and while I don't agree that the WW is as sexist as robst thinks it is (female founders and a co-ed school in the 900s, hello) it's still a GREAT AU.

A Better Man Teen, by Valandar: This is one of the most interesting AUs I've ever come across - where Vernon Dursley decides not to be such a giant flaming pustule, and so changes the world for the better.

A Marauder's Plan, Teen, by catsarecool: post-Prisoner of Azkaban AU, where rather than buggering off to gods know where, Sirius decides to actually use his Black cunning and political acumen to help Harry.

Hawaii 5-0

Mamo's Books And Music, (Steve/Danny), various ratings: As you can see, I have a thing for AUs. This is another fun one - Steve is a bookstore owner after an injury cut short his career. Great disability rep, and I really love how seamlessly the author has transitioned everyone over to their roles in this AU.

Through The Darkness by islandgirl, Teen, Steve/Danny: Navy SEAL Steve is rehabbing at Tripler when he starts getting letters from school kid Grace Williams as part of a 'support our troops' initiative, and eventually meets her dad, Danny. Despite the angsty premise, this is a really sweet, comforting fic.

Hockey RPF:

To Be Seen Aright, by deastar (SidGeno, BDSM AU various ratings): For some people, RPF is a hard limit, as is BDSM AU, and I get that. But really, the BDSM is just the framework for some of the best character development I've ever read; especially in the first one, you will feel your heart ripped right out of your chest then put back together. And there's so much thought and care that's gone into every word, every action - I can't recommend it enough.

(okay, this is getting ridiculous. Part II in a bit.)

House M.D

When Pranks Go Wrong (and many sequels) by In The House. (House/ Cuddy). Initially set in season five, this for want of a nail fic ultimately diverges into its own AU after "someone" plants a trip wire in House's office. I enjoy this series, because it fulfills my inner desire for at least one thing to go right for House in his personal life (but it's House so of course things are never easy). In addition, there is excellent characterization of House, Wilson, and Cuddy in particular, and realistic character growth.

A truly slow burn WIP with excellent world-building and thoughtfulness: Birds of a Feather. The fandom is Harry Potter and the 'ship is Tom Riddle and Hermione Granger. An alternate universe where Tom Riddle and Hermione Ranger grew up together and attend Hogwarts. Rating is Mature and the burn is slow at 400K+ words and some hugging and kissing, so far. The comments are worth a read with an author who does thoughtfully reply to commenters.

Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail is a Bucky Barnes recovering fic that is funny and touching and sweet. Lots of trauma, given the subject, but it's a lovely story that I love very much.

I bounced off HPMOR so hard I almost got whiplash. (And I'm friends with the author's father, and he kept pushing me to read it. Oy.)

Actual recs:

"Amalgum - Lockhart's Folly" (Harry Potter.) Story blurb "Death wants free of its Master and proposes sending Harry back in time to avoid the unnecessary deaths in fighting Voldemort. Harry readily accepts, thinking he'll start anew as a Firstie. Instead, Harry's soul, magic, and memories end up at the beginning of Second Year — in GILDEROY LOCKHART! " (Adopted with author's permission from an abandoned fic with mis-spelled title.) Some humor, mature Harry fighting Lockhart, Lockhart as competent human.

Anything from Flamethrower, regardless of fandom.
  • Swung By Serafim is about what might have happened had Lockhart's Obliviate worked. On Voldemort's horcrux.
  • Of a Linear Circle is long and episodic. Currently into Part IX, but each part is complete in itself. Hard to describe, but the AO3 blurb starts " In September of 1971, Severus Snape finds a forgotten portrait of the Slytherin family in a dark corner of the Slytherin Common Room. At the time, he has no idea that talking portrait will affect the rest of his life. On 31st July 1995, Harry Potter disappears from Little Whinging a few minutes after midnight. The means of his departure are unfathomable, and the Order's only relief in their concern is the fact that Voldemort was not responsible." AU after Harry's Fourth year, but there's a lot of 'under-canon' changes that don't become apparent until later in the story. Ron is a reasonable kid, Slytherins are not all bad, lots of magical theory which may or may not be canon

Wherein was bound a child, a Dark is Rising Will Stanton/Bran Davies series, set some years after the events of Silver on the Tree. Three parts, part 1 is G and pre-relationship.

but not for spring to well up by tookumade, rated T (Haikyuu). Urban fantasy/magical realism AU, featuring Suna Rintarou/Miya Osamu and his twin brother Atsumu.

Anything by Esselle, Ellessey, or DeathBelle, regardless of fandom.

Spun Like Sugar by Neyasochi, rated E. Voltron Legendary Defender, modern AU, Shiro/Keith. Shiro is struggling running a fledgling bakery business out of a decrepit food truck and could use a little sugar; luckily Keith has money to burn.

Your Sharp And Glorious Thorn by Arahir, rated T, fantasy AU, Shiro/Keith. To end the war they inherited, Keith marries the king he led an army against.

I’ve included a fair number of WIPs or finished-but-with-WIP-sequels here, but only ones that are being updated regularly.

Halo Effect, by Alex51324. Downtown Abbey, rated M/T, complete in two parts with the possibility of more, Thomas Barrow/Original Character. A minor change in the third episode sets off a redemption arc and a grand romance for Thomas. This is meticulously researched queer Edwardian/WWI fiction that far transcends the source material. You could easily watch just the first three episodes or even skim the Wikipedia entry and then jump in. The author also has a very funny Downton Abbey/Avengers crossover.

Reprise, by Elfpen. Star Wars, rated T, three novel-length parts complete and fourth part WIP. At the moment of his death, Ben Kenobi is thrown back 41 years into the past, much to the bewilderment of teenage Obi-Wan Kenobi. Sprawling massive AU with lots of character work for the entire ensemble and great action sequences, too. I reread this one a lot!

Chirp by AmariT. Batman comics, rated G, WIP with a finished chapter count. Nine-year-old Tim Drake accidentally cracks Batman and Robin’s comm frequency while searching for aliens; hijinx (and cats) ensue. AmariT has a knack for writing kid/teen characters who are both far smarter than the adults around them and far more ridiculous — this is my current favorite WIP along with the above-recced Salvage. Another fic that goes AU early enough in the timeline you can get away with a Wikipedia skim.

Sorrowful and Immaculate Hearts, by Unpretty. DCU/Batman/Superman, rated G-E, one-shot series. "A DC universe where moms are awesome and raise their kids right. Now with more melanin and queerness". I suggest starting with Empty Graves or Bad Publicity.

I heartily second Cor et Cerebrum, and also recommend the authors lowflyingfruit and CDelphiki (particularly the In for a Pound series) for more lengthy Batman comics fic.

Besides Salvage, another great Avatar: The Last Airbender fic by MuffinLance is Towards the Sun. "Zuko botches his escape on the day of the eclipse and sits out the war in prison. What will the Gaang do with a new Fire Lord they can't trust? Season Four ‘Zuko never joined the Gaang, and he's really bad at being good’ AU." Rated T, WIP.

Another Brother, by AvocadoLove. ATLA, rated G, WIP (don’t be scared by the 10 year update span, the author recently revived it after a few years of hiatus and is now updating regularly). The grandparent of the "Water Tribe adopts Zuko" subgenre.

Proof by AlphaCygni. Star Trek: Deep Space 9, rated M, complete, Elim Garak/Julian Bashir (also Elim Garak/Cardassia). Garak is never exiled to DS9, but ends up meeting Dr. Bashir anyway. Canon knowledge helps, but this works just fine as a standalone sci-fi epic.

Two Star Trek survival epics with Jim Kirk and another character: We Two Alone by shoreleave (AOS/reboot, Kirk+Bones, rated T), and Sha Ka Ree by ThereBeWhalesHere (TOS, Kirk/Spock, rated E).

snipers solve 99% of all problems by silentwalrus is a fic which I think might please HPMOR lovers and haters alike while being relentlessly funny. Harry Potter/Fullmetal Alchemist, rated M, WIP.

Legal Partners, Miggy. Ace Attorney, rated T, complete, Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright with a bit of Klavier Gavin/Apollo Justice. "Miles Edgeworth isn't totally sure how he ended up in this bet to demonstrate the strength of his and Phoenix Wright's (entirely professional and platonic! really!) relationship, but he knows it's Klavier's fault." Extremely fluffy romcom and one of my go-to comfort reads.

i too have been keeping pandemic anxiety at bay by reading harry potter dramoine fics... and the occasional atla zutara fic.

    so, from my ao3 bookmarks:

    The Gloriana Set, by ThebeMoon
    rated M, 271,830 words (81 chapters)
The War is won, and Hermione Granger is back at Hogwarts as an “Eighth Year”, feeling reckless and determined to shed her prim bookworm persona. She will do as she pleases, and anyone who doesn’t like it will see the business end of her wand. Also returning is Draco Malfoy, universally hated but determined to restore his family’s name. Hermione’s hopes for a quiet school year are quickly dashed as she contends with mischievous First Years, killer plants, enchanted hair accessories, a totally inappropriate Moaning Myrtle, renegade Death Eaters, a nice vampire, a poorly named study group, a depraved party, and mysterious, threatening blood messages on the castle walls.

How to Win Friends and Influence People, by olivieblake
    rated M, 386,462 words (42 chapters)
Real heroes never quit. Real villains never die. Dramione with ensemble cast, post-war, espionage AU.

What Remains When the Flowers Die?, by AWildJaxWrites
    rated G, 80,202 words (40 chapters)
Katara had a simple plan for the summer: work at Sokka's flower shop and save up before going to medical school. It turned out that her brother's mysterious friend Zuko was only the start of her life spiraling out of control.
The Avatar has been found, Katara inherits a new job, and world peace has a ridiculous amount of strings attached. Is it too much to ask wanting to spend some time with the only guy who isn't freaked out about her bond with an ancient spirit?

    I really enjoyed
    the Kaiidth Series by Valyria

It is mainly set in the rebooted Star Trek universe and the main relationship is between Spock and Uhura. The stories clock in at 362,208 words so that is a chunk of reading! It is rated E.

The author's summary: A Spock/Uhura series which covers the beginning of their relationship at the Academy in Winds Against A Star, the events of the 2009 film in Spear in Hand Spear in Heart and ends with All Things that Burn which is set six months into the Enterprise's first mission.

There is another story not mentioned in the summary which is about their son which I have read multiple times (it is one of my favorites) called "It Is Our Way". The summary refers to it as a "very Vulcan love story"
