Photoshop CS4 on OS X Mojave worked fine for years - won't open today

I have Photoshop CS4 running on my MacBook Pro (Mojave 10.14.6). I use it almost daily. I've been running it for years with no problems. This morning when I I tried to open it, the icon in the dock bounced once and then I got the "Photoshop quit unexpectedly" window. I have changed literally nothing on the computer between yesterday and today. Help!

Sorry this is usual obnoxious tech question, but did you try restarting?

Try clearing the application's caches and tempfiles? (Caveat: be sure to back up your computer before doing this.)

I've had apps that suddenly stopped working due to an update, so I searched for recent news about CS4 and Mojave, and found this.

No worries - that would be my first response to someone with a tech question too :) Yes, I did restart.

Thanks - already tried that - no joy.

I'm a bit concerned about what else that will do, but if I run out of options I'll try that.

This may be a long shot , but how much free space do you have on your hard drive? Maybe Photoshop trying to use more virtual memory than your hard drive has available. If so, you can try freeing up some space or adding another drive.

Did you try resetting the PS prefs? Hold down OPTION+COMMAND+SHIFT as you start PS. It should ask you if you want to delete the current settings. Yes. PS will create a new prefs file on the next start.

Alas, you will use all those little customizations you've made over the years but this often cures PS startup issues.

In regards to the “allow Photoshop to control” solution, I’ve seen it suggested that you first remove Photoshop from the list altogether, then add it back and mark is as “allowed.” Some say the system needs a little nudge like that.
