A minimalist heartbreaker

Friends, please help me remember, and possibly find, a game I once played.
It was a lo-res adventure game where the main character was given a choice between claiming a treasure or proceeding with a partner.
If you choose the treasure, you continue alone, grow old, and die.
If you choose the partner, you continue farther, grow old, watch your partner grow old and die, then die.
I remember it hit me like a ton of bricks. People I told about it scoffed, so I sent it to them, and to a person they wept.
Does anyone else remember this?
