For drinking water container--Clay or copper or glass?
July 20, 2019 10:09 PM   Subscribe

Getting rid of plastic and need to buy a water bottle/container but just for home or work. I prefer to fill a bottle with only water and drink from the bottle (no dirty cups) at room temperature throughout the day. I prefer something with a wide mouth, so it is easy to clean, and a lid or cap.

Not sure about all the woo-woo "benefits" of the copper or clay for holding and storing water but have an open mind and that's why I remain intrigued. Glass (or Borosilicate) is the cheaper option of the three and has no baggage.

Not a fan of stainless steel or BPA free plastic.

Your recommendations or insights are appreciated

Best answer: Mason jars!

I'd have a hard time trusting clay, any in my experience, copper is soft, so I'd probably stick with glass.

Best answer: Mason jars are great because they come in all different sizes but they all take the same lids. And the lids seal properly, and if they get gruddy you can boil them. They even come in some colors!

I have one of these Lifefactory bottles. It gives the water no strange tastes, can be easily washed, travels well, and has a wide mouth.

I have a heavy glass water bottle with a screw-on cap that I really like. Unfortunately, it was a gift so I don't know what brand it is or where it was purchased. But yeah, I can't imagine glass affecting the taste of the water.

Best answer: Does your local supermarket sell Voss water in glass bottles? If so, grab a couple of them. The have a really nice wide mouth and feel good in the hand. I put them in my handbag as well and they have never leaked.

Snow Peak's double walled titanium mugs are a go to; as are their Kanpai bottles. Pricey; but they are crafted rather than slaved...

Like quince above, my wife uses and loves her Lifefactory bottles. Kind of a silicone cage around it so it at least has a chance when you drop it. She likes room temperature water, so never puts ice in it. I have several of the SS Yeti knock-off tumblers and I like them a lot.

I would steer clear of copper, because copper is toxic. Leaching may not be a problem if you've just got water in it, but I know it is with acidic juice and wine, and I'd be leery taking the risk. (Unless of course the copper is lined on the inside with polycarbonate! OMG.)

Wife and I both have had our stainless steel Klean Kanteens for years and love them.

Snapple bottles are perfect for this. Removing the label completely is a pain, but then you've got a perfect wide-mouthed glass bottle that you can wash in the dishwasher.

I have a couple of corkcicle thermoses and they're amazing but if you don't want to keep your water glacially cold all day then the expense of them might not be worth it to you. Otherwise I like the Voss bottles mentioned above.

I like wide-mouth mason jars. You can get various special screw-on lids to make them into something more like a sippy cup (this is one example) but I just drink from a quart jar as-is.
