turning off template formatting -Microsoft word

How do I disable MS Word formatting, once I upload and start working on one of their templates?

I have MS Office 365 ProPlus. I downloaded a letter template to use as the basis for a formal letter I was writing.

I wanted to make a slight change to the formatting, as the letter needed to be signed by two parties. Every time I added in the second name beside (on the same line) the first, that name pops up at the top of the page in the same place on the page (roughly half way in). This is really irritating and difficult to Google help for.

I don't want to lose all the formatting on the page, I just want to be able to tweak aspects similar to removing a formula or adding different formula for a cell in Excel.

How do I do this?

Is it still a .dot? Save it as a .docx and you should be able to edit fully.

I don't think there's any such thing as disabling formatting in a word document; everything in there follows some styling rules - even ordinary text in the 'Normal' style.

I think a better approach is to tinker with the styling, to try and find what is causing that odd behaviour. A few ways to get started:
1. from the View menu, turn on Ruler and Gridlines
2. in the Layout menu, have a look at the Columns setup (the behaviour sounds like text is wrapping into a second column)
3. from the View menu, have a look at Outline view to see if any clues become visible there

Good luck!
