Book search: There were these two high school guys.....

I'm trying to remember the title and author of a book that I read a few years ago. Details within.
Set in Ohio, or maybe somewhere else in mid-America. The setting is a real town.
It's about two boys who are seniors in high school. One is the narrator. The other is the HS valedictorian, his father is abusive, and his mother is absent. They set themselves the task of finding out what happened to the missing mom. Police and other authorities are involved.
The book may have been shelved among the mysteries by my local library, but while there is a search, it's not a conventional mystery story. Not written more than about 10 years ago.

Response by poster: Alas, no. Its interesting, though, that the author started with a similar situation but took the story in a different direction.

Best answer: A Brilliant Death seems like a pretty good fit. (I haven't read it, just basing this on the goodreads description/reviews.)

Response by poster: Bingo! Hurrah for alyxstarr. I'd just about given up.
I was prompted to remember by the recent AskMe calling for suggestions for books that would make a good movie. Which it would, with a little adaptation.
I was captivated. I give the book 5 stars for depiction of small town life and careful plotting.
